Happy summer!
See you next year.
2008 - 2009 Coming!
Accepting applications for next year.
Contact me if you are considering attending my class.
Here’s the end of the year Puzzler. I’ve added a second one to end the year with a bang.
May’s Web Bonus Question(s):
(a little trickier.)
Can you do both?
Shopping Spree.
Eloise bought new clothes for school. In the first store she spent half of her money plus $10. In the second store she spent half of what was left plus $5. In the last store she spent three-fourths (3/4) of what was left and came home with $5. How much did she start out with?Here’s an End-of-the-Year bonus, Bonus “stolen” from Click and Clack.
Now you could earn up to 40 bonus points this month! It’s a little tricky, though.The Crazy Car Buyer
A guy bought a car about 21 miles north of the city. He didn’t have anyone to help him pick it up so he decided to do it all by himself. And because he wasn’t trading the car in, he came up with this ingenious plan. He drove his old car 21 miles north and parked it in the dealer’s lot, picked up the new car, paid for it and got the keys, and drove it one mile south. He locked it up, walked back north one mile to the dealer, picked up his old car drove it two miles. He locked it up, walked back one mile, picked up the new car, drove it two miles south, locked it up, walked one mile back to the other car,etc., until he reached home with both cars.”So the question is, at the end of the very, very long day, how many total miles did he walk and drive? Sounds simple, right, but be careful!
Just solve the problem and then email me the answer before the end of the month for 20 bonus points. Don’t give it to me in class; that doesn’t count! (And I may forget to register it.)
Email me if you need a hint.
Need extra help on some new concepts we’re learning? Try this website one of my students introduced to me. It can be a little distracting with the day-glow colors, but the explanations are simple and easy to follow. www.coolmath.com/algebra/ Click on your class (algebra 1, 2 or Pre-Calc) on the lower right side of the homepage to see some sample lessons. They can really help.
Manic Math Enterprises is a tutoring service geared for the Northern Delaware-area home school moms (and their families) who stress about teaching their high school students algebra. Classes meet once a week, on Tuesdays, at my home in Pigeon Run. Each week I answer homework questions, conduct quizzes and teach the next lessons for the coming week, which the students do at home. They then hand these homeworks in to me for grading and evaluating the following week. All textbooks are Saxon algebra books. Check the class’s web page for edition number.
Since I don’t homeschool my kids anymore I’ve decided to take on a part-time job in my “spare time.” I now tutor math at the Mathnasium Learning Center in the Woodmill Corporate Center on Kirkwood Highway (near Marshalls and AC Moore). It’s a lot of fun and I get to work with kids at all age/grade levels, not just high school. Bob Bennethum, the owner, is a great guy and will design a program specifically for your student. He and I also put an SAT prep class together. If you know someone who may need some extra help, check out Mathnasium at www.mathnasium.com
